“Where light becomes perception.”

This piece is inspired by the retina, a layered neural tissue located at the back of the eye.

The retina is where vision begins. It receives light from the external world and transforms it into electrical signals that can be interpreted by the brain. Rather than being a simple surface, it is a highly organized, multilayered structure — often described as having around ten distinct layers, each contributing to different stages of visual processing.

In this drawing, the retina is represented as a series of stacked layers, reflecting its intricate cellular organization. From photoreceptors that detect light, to intermediate neurons that process signals, to ganglion cells that transmit information to the brain, each layer plays a role in shaping what we ultimately perceive.

The composition emphasizes both order and depth — a reminder that what we experience as a seamless visual world is built upon layers of structure and interpretation.

Artwork size (unframed): 29.7 × 42 cm (A3). Acrylic on Van Gogh 360g fine-grain black paper

Framed size: 40 × 50 cm. Presented in an IKEA RÖDALM frame (black).
