Whispers at the synaptic cleft

A visual exploration of the synaptic cleft, where neutotransmitters cross the tiny gap between neurons and carry signals from one cell to the next.

At a chemical synapse, two neurons do not directly touch. Between them lies a microscopic gap called the synaptic cleft. When an electrical signal reaches the end of a neuron, chemical messengers known as neurotransmitters are released into this tiny space. They cross the cleft, bind to receptors on the neighboring cell, and help determine whether the signal continues. This process takes place across trillions of synapses throughout the nervous system, constantly shaping how information is transmitted and processed.

Whispers at the Synaptic Cleft imagines these invisible exchanges as quiet conversations between cells. The clustered neurons seem to reach toward one another, while the scattered points suggest molecular signals moving through the spaces between them.

What we experience as motivation, fear, attachment, memory or emotion can feel deeply personal and intangible. Yet beneath those experiences are physical events—ions moving, molecules being released, receptors responding, and cells communicating across spaces too small for us to see.

Some of the most powerful conversations within us happen in the smallest spaces.
